Roof Shingle Installation - Eaves & Verges

Applying Roof Shingle Strip to Eaves and Verges

To create a welted drip into the gutter (to be attached later); and along sloping verges secure a 50 x 25mm timber batten to the fascia with the top edge level with the roof surface.

Cut lengths of bitumen roof shingle strip from the roll (maximum 1m long), cutting sufficient lengths to run the length of the eaves.

Tack the strip along the timber batten with the mineral surface against the face of the batten. Next fix the hardboard strip by nailing at 150mm centres through the bitumen roof shingle strip and into the batten, with the top edge of the hardboard strip level with the roof surface.

Each length of roof shingle strip should be overlapped. Repeat the application of the shingle strip for the full length of the eaves and verges. The roof shingle strip should run past each end of the eaves.

Apply Xtra-Seal Sealant to the face of the hardboard in a zig-zag pattern.

Each bitumen roof shingle strip should now be turned around the hardboard former strip and turned back onto the roof. Roll the membrane with a rubber roller to create a bond to the hardboard and a flat drip finish.

In cold weather it may be necessary to gently warm the material with an electric paint stripper or similar – do not use open flames.

Nail the overlap onto the roof with large headed galvanised clout nails at 150mm centres close to the top edge of the strip to avoid nails being exposed when fixing the shingles.

To create a neat drip finish to the sloping verges, start at the bottom of the slope and repeat the above process up the sloping verges. Finish the detail between eaves drip and verge drip by cutting the eaves strip and overlapping the verge drip.

All eaves and verges should be completed as described above before the main roof area is covered with shingles.
