Compatibility
Icopal PVC Contact Adhesive is compatible with tissue faced PIR insulations boards along with a variety of substrates commonly encountered in flat roofing applications such as timber, concrete, metal and more.
Important Note: The adhesive is not compatible with expanded polystyrene (EPS) or extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation boards, due to the solvent content.
Icopal PVC Contact Adhesive is suitable for bonding both on the flat and for vertical applications due to its instant grab, making it the ideal choice for detail work.
Application Benefits
Due to the properties and composition of PVC, it is a particularly tough material to adhere to. Often, over time, plasticiser migration from the membrane can occur. This migration can result in a weakened bond if the chemistry of the adhesive is not suitable.
Icopal’s PVC Contact Adhesive provides an outstanding bond and has been formulated to provide a simple application for the application of roof detailing sheets. It exhibits high adhesive and cohesive bond strength and provides excellent flexibility making it an ideal adhesive for PVC roofing membranes.
There is no need to invest in equipment to secure the roof membrane. The Icopal PVC Contact Adhesive is simply applied by brush or lambswool roller providing a quick and easy application.
The low viscosity of the formulation creates the perfect consistency for application and provides exceptional coverage rates, and as a result reduces contractor task time when installing the membrane.
Surface Preparation
The surface, on or against which the adhesive is to be applied, shall be clean, smooth, dry, free of fins, sharp edges, loose and foreign materials, oil and grease. Depressions greater than 6 mm should be filled and all sharp projections shall be removed. Ensure the substrate is dry – Please refer to the ‘Properties’ section regarding application temperatures. Ambient and substrate temperatures must be at minimum 5 °C. Do not apply if rain is imminent. Do not apply if there is any standing water or frost, or condensation.
Application
Remove the lid and thoroughly stir before (for a minimum 5 minutes) and during application. Apply an even film of Icopal PVC Contact Adhesive at a rate of approximately 0.2 to 0.3 litres/m² to both substrate and membrane using a medium nap roller. Application shall be continuous and uniform avoiding globs or puddles. Do not apply adhesive to areas to be hot air weld jointed. It is recommended to mark out these areas prior to application of the adhesive.
An open time of 1 to 30 minutes (dependent on atmospheric conditions) is recommended before assembly. Icopal PVC Contact Adhesive must be allowed to dry until it does not string or stick to a dry gloved finger touch. If the adhesive is shown to be sticky or stringy then it requires longer to dry.
The coated surfaces must be kept clean before bonding. Any coated area which has been exposed to rain should be allowed to dry and then recoated.
Once the adhesive is ready for mating, carefully roll the membrane onto the adhesive coated substrate while avoiding wrinkles. Immediately brush down the bonded portion of the sheet with a soft bristle broom or a clean dry weighted roller applicator to achieve maximum contact, without air pockets or wrinkles.
