Fleeceback Adhesive for Monarplan Single Ply Roofing Membranes

Icopal Single Ply Fleeceback Adhesive

Icopal’s Single Ply Fleeceback Adhesive is a single component moisture curing polyurethane adhesive that has been formulated for bonding fleece-backed single-ply roofing membranes to various substrates, such as roof insulation panels, for example, Thermazone Roofboard. The product is blue in appearance and is packaged in a 10 kilogram container size and is applied directly from the container.

The adhesive contains no solvents and is VOC and odour free, making it the ideal product for sensitive areas of application where health and safety is of the utmost importance to the client.

Intended Use

Icopal’s Single Ply Fleeceback Adhesive is intended for use with single-ply membranes with a fleece backing, for example Monarplan PVC or Sureplan FPO, in adhered membrane applications.

The adhesive reacts with moisture which then cures to form a permanent strong bond.

Benefits

  • Propellant-free packaging, simple disposal
  • VOC and solvent free
  • No release of volatile solvents into the atmosphere
  • Cold applied
  • Non-foaming formulation
  • Strong permanent bond
  • Easy application.

Compatibility

Single Ply Fleeceback Adhesive is compatible with a range of absorbent and non-absorbent insulation boards to a variety of substrate types. It can bond to tissue faced PIR insulations boards, expanded polystyrene (EPS), and compatible substrates include plywood/OSB and concrete.

For other materials not listed above, it will be necessary to carry out preliminary adhesion tests and observe insulation manufacturer’s instructions.

Application Benefits

Single Ply Fleeceback Adhesive is single-side stick, and only need be applied to the substrate, thereby speeding up application times. It is applied simply by pouring out the adhesive direct to the substrate and spread evenly by roller. The membrane is then laid into the wet adhesive, allowing the adhesive to soak into the fleece backing liner of the membrane.

The adhesive is solvent free and non-flammable and so does not require any additional storage measures to be put in place on site, thus reducing storage and transport costs.

It cures without foaming to give an aesthetically pleasing membrane finish.

Surface Preparation

Do not thin Single Ply Fleeceback Adhesive. Thinning will affect performance. Excessively thick or gelled material should be discarded.

The surface, on or against which adhesive is to be applied, shall be clean, smooth, dry, free of fins, sharp edges, loose and foreign materials, frost and ice, oil and grease. Depressions greater than 6 mm should be feathered, using epoxy, mortar or other approved patching material. All sharp projections shall be removed by sweeping, blowing or vacuum cleaning.

Application

Please refer to the ‘Properties’ section regarding application temperatures. Icopal’s Single Ply Fleeceback Adhesive is a moisture cure product and any moisture present in the air will speed up the curing process. Ambient and substrate temperatures must be at minimum 5 °C, do not apply if rain is imminent.

Ensure membrane is cut and prepared to be laid into adhesive. Position the single-ply fleeceback membrane and allow for minimum 50 mm overlap. The fleeceback membrane will have a fleece-free selvedge to allow for welding at side laps. End laps are to be butt-jointed and strapped with reinforced detailing strips.

Pour the Single-Ply Fleeceback Adhesive in an ‘S’ shaped pattern direct to the substrate at a rate of approximately 2-3 sq.m per kilogram, then using a medium nap roller or squeegee distribute the adhesive. Once the adhesive has been spread, work the adhesive into the substrate ensuring a continuous and even distribution of the adhesive while avoiding puddles.

Once consistent coverage has been achieved, roll the membrane into the adhesive coated substrate avoiding wrinkles in the sheet. Immediately roll with a weighted roller or broom to achieve maximum contact and a smooth, flat finish without air pockets.

The adhesive will cure within 30 minutes at 20 °C or 60 minutes at 10 °C. Full bond strength is normally achieved within 24 hours. Note: Coverage rate is determined by the absorbency of the fleece and substrate condition and should be determined by experiment.
