The Icopal Wildflower Mat includes a range of carefully chosen wildflower species to flower over a prolonged period.
The variety of species supports a diverse range of insect and bird life; wildflowers enhance biodiversity, and offer a visually attractive alternative for green roofs. Icopal Wildflower Mat is lightweight and easy to install and is particularly suited to extensive green roof systems.
The Icopal Wildflower Mat is a pre cultivated UK grown vegetation blanket which comprises of a geo synthetic mat with a thin layer of growing substrate, into which the wildflower plants themselves grow. Around 38 different species are incorporated within the mat which have been carefully chosen to provide flowering of different colours at varying times from spring through to late autumn period.

The Icopal Wildflower Mat is to be used in conjunction with the relevant specified components of the Icopal Extensive Wildflower Green Roof System. It can be used on both flat roofs with a recommended minimum fall of 1:60, and when properly specified, low sloped roofs.
The roof deck should have sufficient drainage points to quickly drain away surface water and prevent waterlogging; extensive green roof vegetation does not like to have excessive water saturation within the root zone.
Wildflowers can withstand dry conditions however additional irrigation will be required in periods of extreme prolonged drought or where aesthetic value in dry periods is important.
The Icopal Wildflower Mat must the laid on the Icopal Biodiverse Substrate at a minimum depth of 100 mm. The finished surface of the extensive substrate must be firm and level when the Icopal Wildflower Mat is laid to ensure a good contact between the substrate and the plant roots. This will ensure a quicker establishment time.
The Icopal Wildflower Mat should be handled with care to avoid any damage. Ensure the Icopal Biodiverse Substrate is raked level before the mats are unrolled over it.
Unroll the mat with the loose end firmly up against the starting edge. Ensure that the edges of the roll are firmly butted up against those of the neighbouring rolls. It is important to ensure that there are no gaps between rolls.
It is also important that once laid the wildflower mats are frequently watered to prevent drying out until the roots are fully established into the Icopal Biodiverse Substrate. It is therefore essential that there is a means of getting water onto the roof. The establishment period is generally between 8 - 12 months.
The Icopal Wildflower Mat system can be installed on flat roofs and when properly specified, on shallow sloped roofs with suitable restraint systems in place. All slopes over 5° require an eaves edge restraint detail.
Once established irrigation is only generally required during prolonged periods of hot dry weather. Sloped roofs retain less water and so will require additonal irrigation. It is recommended to carry out annual maintenance at least twice a year to remove invasive plant and weed species. Vegetation and flower growth is expected to be between 50 and 1000 mm and the flower heads will require removal 1-2 times a year. It is recommended that the roof is strimmed in the early spring and autumn (after the flowers have dropped their seed), and all material removed to allow the roof to thrive.
Delivery And Storage
Icopal Wildflower Mats are delivered in rolls on pallets with approximately 35 m² of mat per pallet.
The Wildflower Mats should be programmed for delivery on the day of installation. The mats should only be left rolled up prior to installation if there is no chance that they will deteriorate.
If the Icopal Wildflower Mats cannot be installed on the day of arrival to site, they need to be unrolled to prevent overheating and allow air to circulate over them. It is important that whilst unrolled, they are kept moist, either by natural rainfall or by irrigation. If in any doubt, please seek advice from Icopal Limited.
