The Icopal ST Lawn Turf intensive green roof system is suitable for both new build and refurbishment projects. Generally installed on flat roofs to a fall, but can be installed on roofs with shallow pitches where a retention system is required. All slopes over 5° will require a mechanically fixed eaves edge restraint.
Initial: Irrigation is required immediately after installation, until the turf is fully established. This could be for a period of up to 8-12 months. During the establishment period irrigation should be frequent to keep the substrate moist.
Once established: It is highly recommended that a suitable permanent irrigation system is installed to ensure the turf survives periods of hot dry weather. Pitched roofs retain less water and so will require additional irrigation.
Water Source: A roof top source with a pressure of 2.5 – 3 bar and a flow rate of 60 L/min is recommended to connect a temporary system if required.
As with terrestrial lawns, the grass will need regular mowing during the growing season. However it can be left to grow longer if required to produce a grass “meadow” look.
Weeds should be removed periodically through the year to reduce the likelihood that they become dominant. It is recommended that a suitable fertiliser is applied to keep the grass healthy. This may be a spring feed of slow/controlled release fertiliser to last the growing season, or more regular granular/liquid feeds throughout the growing season.
A border with a recommended width of 300 – 500 mm of washed river stones (20 – 40 mm diameter) should be used around all roof penetrations, outlets, perimeters and system edges to provide a vegetation free zone.
