Background
Built in the late 1960's this shopping complex is located on a particularly windswept site in the Eastern, South Wales valleys.
Work was underway to redevelop the local shops into a new shopping centre for the local community. Bron Afon, Communities First and Torfaen Council are using
£1.6million of European money to change the landscaping and shop fronts, including partial demolition, and new building works.
The roof covering was scheduled for renewal as part of the major redevelopment programme and revamp of this aging retail precinct.
Challenge
A number of issues combined together to add complexity to the project.
The works needed to be carried out within a three week installation window, arranged to coincide with other essential work being carried out by other contractors. There was extremely limited roof access, and because the shops remained open for the duration of the project there were restrictions on material deliveries and working hours. Care had to be taken due to the proximity of members of the public, and potential distruption to local businesses had to be kept to a minimum. The new roof was installed to the existing aging deck, and re-leveling of some areas of the deck were an additional burden .
Solution
Icopal's Total Torch system was specified consisting vapour control layer and utilising Thermazone Torch-on insulation, to improve the thermal performance of the new roof build up. Installed above the insulation was Total Torch Vapour Dispersion Layer in conjunction with the FireSmart Torch-on Capsheet.
The Firesmart and Total Torch covering specified proved ideal in the circumstances and enabled Feltfab Facilities to complete on time, to budget and to limit the potential inconvenience to shop owners and their customers
created an accessible, functional and aesthetically pleasing roof system that eliminated all previous water leaks
