The new 14-storey Scottish Power Head Office on the corner of St Vincent Street and Elmbank Street in Glasgow was completed during 2016 by main contractor Laing O’Rourke. The new headquarters has become the flagship centre for Scottish Power and houses over 1,500 staff.
The nature of the building’s design meant that a waterproofing membrane solution was required on several different roof areas at various levels. Many of the roofs would incorporate plant and equipment and required a membrane solution that could accommodate surface mounted structures and multiple penetrations.
Working alongside other trades meant only small areas of roof could be made available at any one time. Furthermore, the project required a robust membrane solution that was odour free so that other trades working in close proximity would not be affected.
The preferred membrane solution for the various inverted roofs was Icopal’s Elastoflex Solvent Free cold applied liquid membrane applied directly to the prepared and primed concrete substrate. Knauf’s Polyfoam XPS insulation board and water reducing layer was subsequently installed above the waterproofing membrane prior to the application of pebble ballast.
A cold liquid waterproofing membrane was the preferred waterproofing membrane as it eliminated several risks associated with alternative products whilst also allowing the contractor the ability to apply the membrane in stages as areas became available.
The installation of the Elastoflex Solvent Free membrane was executed to a good standard by Avonside Roofing even when the project was hampered by some of the worst winter weather recorded in years.
