Background

Antrim Area Hospital has undergone the construction of a new £12.4 M Accident and Emergency department, which is one of a number of capital projects currently underway at the hospital. The modern facilities will be well-equipped to provide secure, safe, high quality services to patients, and is due to be opened in early Summer 2013. Part of the structure forms a balcony area which wraps around the building and was designed to provide each overlooking window a view of a green roof system.

Challenge

The roof areas were quite restricted in terms of access due to the construction work above and scaffolding had to be systematically removed and rebuilt as the project progressed. The roof itself was restrictive as it presented low upstand thresholds, the presence of which had to be taken into account when balancing thermal requirements with creating falls on the roof for drainage. Outlets were repositioned to allow positive falls to be created. Due to the orientation of the building, paved areas were provided where there was reduced sunlight which would have otherwise affected a green roof planted system.

Solution

Due to the sensitivity of the site, Icopal put forward a heat-activated system, comprising Icopal Micoral SK vapour control layer and Pyrobar Underlay. An expanded polystyrene (EPS) tapered insulation scheme was used to create efficient falls in the roof system, which also included falls in the gutter areas. The waterproofing was finished with Tecnatorch SBS mineral capsheet, and in areas of green roof Icopal Rootbar capsheet was used instead.

With site restrictions and scheduling an issue, Icopal's EasyGreen modular system was chosen for the green roof element as the logistics of getting the materials on the roof deck were far easier compared with traditional sedum systems, and allowed for quick and easy installation by the roofing contractor.

Each interconnecting module of the Easy Green system contains all of the components required to provide an instant sedum green roof. The advantage of this system over traditional multi-layered schemes is that the sedum is already established and rooted into the growing medium within the module giving the roof an instant green roof and therefore finished the project to the high standards as set out by the client and the architects.
