Background

Torry is a residential area located in the southern suburbs of Aberdeen. During the latter part of the last decade, the area was earmarked for regeneration as part of Aberdeen City Councils series of city masterplans. The aim of the plan was to create a sustainable, and well balanced community, which provides a clean, safe, attractive and prosperous home for residents well into the future. One of the key elements identified was the need to extensively redevelop current housing conditions upgrading outdated and unpopular dwelling types in the area.

Challenge

ICS1067-Torry-Regeneration-Aberdeen_765x533The sloping roofs to the two storey residential blocks, originally waterproofed with bituminous membranes in the 1970’s, needed to be upgraded without interrupting the convenience of the local residents. Furthermore, given the severity of slope, weather conditions were also an important consideration during the application process. The roofs represented the outdated nature of the ageing building stock whose renovation was an integral part of the renovation process.

Solution

The existing bituminous waterproofing membrane system was removed and the underlying timber deck prepared to receive a high performance bituminous layer that would act as a carrier membrane for Icopal’s Elastoflex Solvent Free Liquid Membrane System.

The sloping nature of the roof meant that installing contractor, William Rae (Aberdeen) Limited used a material that could be installed quickly without interruption. The Elastoflex Solvent Free membrane was the ideal choice as its wet-on-wet application method meant that full blocks could be completed in one operation minimising the potential impact of interruptions. Also, use of the Elastoflex Speedshot allowed the applicators to accelerate the curing time of the membrane ensuring that it did not run and would not be adversely affected by subsequent rainfall.

The solution was both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
