Aviva01The Aviva Stadium is the new home of international rugby and football for Ireland. Due for completion in 2010, the new stadium has been constructed on the site of the previous Lansdowne Road stadium. The new ground includes the construction of a new podium and grand staircase allowing spectators easy access to the underlying railway and transport facilities.


Aviva06Waterproofing the new podium deck and staircase required a membrane that would be applied directly to the new concrete structure. The membrane was to be subsequently covered with an appropriate drainage board and cementitious screed, providing a robust surface to receive the intended pedestrian traffic.

The new concrete deck incorporated many complicated details including expansion joints, multiple surface penetrations, upstands, glazing panels and many more. Icopal were contacted at an early stage within the design process, and were able to work closely with the architect and main contractor to specify the right product including the production of technical details to waterproof the complicated elements.


Aviva02Icopal’s Parabit Hot Melt waterproofing was the preferred membrane of choice. Parabit is an SBS-modified bitumen membrane specifically developed for use on concrete podium deck applications. Applied hot in liquid form, the Parabit membrane is a fast and cost effective solution that is fully bonded to the concrete surface.

The high elastomeric nature of the membrane ensured that any minor building movement was comfortably tolerated, without compromising its waterproofing integrity. Furthermore, its self-healing properties meant the membrane could tolerate minor damage from following trades. The membrane application was complimented by a range of accessories, including the use of neoprene and modified bitumen flashings for the expansion joints, upstands and penetrations.

The membrane build-up was completed with the application of the Icopal Rootbar torch-on capsheet membrane providing an extremely robust protection layer and surface onto which the following layers were installed.
