Urban Development
Situated on the site of the former Ancoats Hospital, architect Will Alsop’s first residential scheme in the UK, comprises 142 apartments and 12,000 ft² of commercial space on the ground floor. The first development for private sale in the regeneration area of New Islington, with its dramatic shape and cladding is shaping up to be one of Manchester’s most striking buildings, produces more than 70% of its energy requirements on site. Their design for the single-storey building, which features a double curved hybrid steel and timber roof with cavity wall construction below, was developed to form a seductive shape to suit the immediate landscape.
MAC Roofing brought Icopal in early on in the design process, to help with the specification and produce the detailed drawings for the architect and developer Urban Splash.
The main roof tops the third layer of chips but Mac Roofing also installed Icopal systems on the lower roof elements; on the section of the building that cantilevers out over the canal in New Islington.
Solution
MAC Roofing, a member of the Intelligent Membrane Association (IMA), choose Icopal’s Proflex system to be installed on the Urban Splash apartment blocks, so named because they resemble a stack of chips.
Product Benefits
Proflex is a high performance elastomeric bitumen roof system suitable for use on flat, curved or pitched roofs, and is supported by an Icopal insurance backed 20 year guarantee when installed by an IMA approved contractor. The system used on this project comprised Proflex Vapour Control Layer and rigid polyisocyanurate insulation (PIR). This was then covered with Proflex Perforated Preparation Layer immediately followed by Proflex underlay. The system was then topped with Proflex Brown mineral cap sheet.
