Background
Rainford High Technology College in Merseyside was undergoing a major refurbishment project involving the demolition, refurbishment and construction of new purpose built teaching environments.
The initial phase of the project involved the refurbishment of the existing east block which suffered from general deterioration, poor thermal performance and water ingress.
Challenge
Given the level of construction activity operational during the programmed refurbishment, MAC Roofing, were tasked with removing and replacing the existing aged bituminous waterproofing system with a new synthetic, lightweight waterproofing membrane.
The schedule of works also called for the removal and replacement of a large number of dangerous Georgian wired skylights with new units that would be built up and angled to maximise natural daylight levels entering the classrooms below .
Solution
Monarplan FM PVC single-ply roofing membrane was selected as the preferred product to renovate the aged roof. Incorporating a new vapour control layer and insulation the Monarplan FM mechanically fastened single ply membrane was used in conjunction with pre-fabricated pvc-coated metal at all perimeter and rooflight upstands as a fast and efficient method of achieving a watertight roof in a very short timescale. This made the building weather-tight allowing other trades to follow on as part of the overall refurbishment project
