As part of a £6m renovation project involving the refurbishment of existing buildings including squash courts, the sports hall and swimming pool and the construction of a new extension to the south elevation, the leisure centre required the existing flat roof coverings to be upgraded and brought in line with current thermal legislation requirements. The first phase of the project was to be completed during the summer / autumn of 2013 and involved the upgrading of the existing flat roofs above the areas mentioned.
The renovation project involved a large amount of internal improvements, including re-decoration, new heating, ventilation and lighting upgrades. As a result it was essential that the flat roof areas above the refurbished rooms received a new insulated waterproofing system that would maximise the efficiency of the new heating and ventilation system whilst also keeping these modernised areas watertight. Furthermore, the specification required a product that would match other recently renovated areas of the centre and thus achieving an aesthetically pleasing finish to the building.
Following comprehensive analysis of the existing flat roof build-ups it was determined that the existing system could be overlaid with a new single ply warm roof system, and thereby minimise disruption to the day to day running of the centre.
The new waterproofing system comprised Icopal's Micoral SK heat-activated/self- adhesive vapour control layer with Thermazone Roofboard tapered insulation installed above to provide positive falls for roof drainage. The system was then finished with Sureplan FPO Fleeceback single ply waterproofing membrane.
The anthracite coloured Sureplan FPO Fleeceback membrane was fully adhered to the tapered insulation using Icopal’s SBR Contact Spray Adhesive.
Further to the flat areas, Sureplan FPO single ply roofing membrane was also installed vertically to sections of walls and stairwell access points maintaining the consistent appearance of the anthracite coloured membrane. The detailing was further enhanced with the inclusion of matching standing seam profiles.
The project demonstrated how a good working relationship between the relevant parties involved can be achieved to deliver a system solution that is fit for purpose and installed ahead of schedule.
